Bars may reopen Oct. 14 at 50% capacity in Texas counties with low COVID-19 hospitalization rates, Gov. Greg Abbott said Wednesday. The reopenings are contingent on county judges opting their counties in with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and assisting with enforcement of COVID-19 health protocols.
Bars and nightclubs were ordered closed statewide in late June, as the pandemic began spreading across Texas. Those that are allowed to reopen next week must make sure that all customers are seated while eating or drinking and that groups are spaced at least six feet apart. Tables of more than six people aren’t allowed.
“Opening bars does not mean that COVID-19 is no longer a threat, and most Texans are still susceptible to the virus,” Abbott cautioned Wednesday. He also increased capacities for amusement parks, movie theaters, zoos, aquariums and bowling alleys to 75% in areas with low COVID-19 hospitalizations.
